Hospice launches community respite club

A new club at St Helena Hospice for people living with a life-limiting condition or who are experiencing frailty or dementia or for older people who feel socially isolated, will start in November to encourage friendship through meaningful activities and to give informal carers a break.

Good Days Community Club starts on Friday 6th November and will be hosted weekly by the St Helena Care & Support team, who are experts in caring for people at their most vulnerable time of life.

Participants can look forward to a varied activity programme in a small group where they can stay connected, feel involved in life and make friends in a supportive environment.

Sessions will be held 10am to 2pm on Fridays with refreshments and a fish and chips lunch included in the cost, giving time for families and informal carers to have a rest. The Care and Support Assistants will be able to help with light personal care if needed during the session, but the Club is not suitable for people with no mobility or who require full hoisting.

Shani Levy, Associate Director of Community Development and Care Services at St Helena Hospice, said:

“We are absolutely thrilled to be launching the Good Days Community Club. Our team has been working incredibly hard behind the scenes to bring everything together, and we can’t wait to welcome our very first group.

“Our Care & Support team is delighted to be part of something so special and meaningful for our community. Not only do they provide exceptional care to people in their own homes, but they are now creating opportunities for people to build friendships, enjoy new experiences and stay connected, while also giving their loved ones a well-deserved break.

“The warm and welcoming Good Days Community Club is designed to provide structured support for people living with a life-limiting illness, frailty or dementia. It offers the opportunity to reconnect through friendship, routine and meaningful experiences, helping people feel valued, included and part of a supportive community, while giving family members and carers peace of mind that their loved one is safe, supported and enjoying their day.”

Good Days Community Club costs £50 per person per session and will be held on Fridays at the Joan Tomkins Centre within the Hospice grounds at Barncroft Close, Highwoods. St Helena Care & Support is a profit with purpose initiative of St Helena Hospice, where funds raised go back into running the charity.
