Beyond the diagnosis

St Helena Hospice is recording the lives of some of the people St Helena supports across north east Essex.

St Helena Hospice will begin a creative life stories project recording the oral histories of some of the people it supports across north east Essex, thanks to Essex County Council’s Arts & Cultural Fund.

The project will use audio, video, writing and photography to capture the lives of 40 people beyond their diagnosis, and record what matters to them as they face end of life.

The project will celebrate people as individuals and reflect on a whole life lived. It is an opportunity to empower people to have a voice, while reflecting as they recall and share memories to create a lasting legacy for their loved ones.

Their lives and stories will be celebrated through a series of exhibitions across north east Essex to celebrate the 40th anniversary of St Helena Hospice in 2025.

How to get involved

The Life Stories project is open to all patients of St Helena Hospice.

Create a unique lasting legacy by recording your story for the St Helena Hospice Life Stories project. We would love to feature you in an exhibition about life and what matters to you, to be held in 2025 to celebrate our 40th anniversary.

  • You’ll have a chat with a project interviewer about your life, which is recorded
  • Tell the interviewer just a few of your favourite memories or your whole life history; as little or as much as you like – it’s your story
  • You will be given a copy of the audio recording free of charge which you can choose to keep just for your loved ones to listen to in the future; or choose to open it up as a public reference resource at the Essex Sound and Video Archive
  • St Helena Hospice will use a small section of your story as part of our Life Stories project
  • It’s free to take part as the project is kindly funded by Essex County Council’s Arts and Cultural Fund

If you’d like to be part of the Life Stories project, please send an email to stories@sthelena.org.uk or tell your usual St Helena Hospice healthcare professional.
