Classic car auctioned for hospice

A 1929 Singer Junior Saloon classic car goes under the hammer on Saturday 12th April at Reeman Dansie auctioneers, with proceeds donated to St Helena Hospice.

Current owners Merriel and Paul Gallifant read in the local newspaper that St Helena was appeal for support with its extra £1.1m costs and decided to donate the classic car in memory of their daughter, Mehalah Nott. Merriel said:

“Our daughter, Mehalah, had terminal breast cancer and she was under the care of the hospice at home for quite a while beforehand and she died at the hospice.

“I was so grateful for SinglePoint who were always there when I needed them, we had to get them out in the middle of the night. My 4 year old grandson had counselling with the hospice too.

“On the day we decided that we would part with the car, we saw a news article about the hospice saying they needed £1m extra, and we thought, in memory of Mehalah, it would be an idea to donate the car to the hospice. As the advert says, every little helps.

“I’m 81 this year and I first drove the Singer when I was 16 or 17. Mehalah passed her test in our little Austin 7, which we won’t part with. She was such an exceptional person and so brave and so bright. I think she would have approved of our decision.

“St Helena Hospice is the charity we support. I just cleared my wardrobe and taken it down to the hospice shop. You drive round the area and see all these houses and all these villages, and there is only one hospital and one hospice, we just need hospitals and hospices.”

Auction starts at 11:00 on Saturday 12th April. Reeman Dansie are also kindly donating the buyer’s premium to St Helena too. The full story of the Singer and auction details are on Reeman Dansie’s website
