Hospice nurse awarded prestigious title of Queen’s Nurse

A St Helena Hospice nurse who supports people at home at the end of life has been awarded the title of Queen’s Nurse, in recognition of her high level of commitment to patient care and nursing practice.

Nichole Hockett, Hospice in the Home Senior Sister, was awarded the prestigious honour alongside 510 dedicated community nurses nationally, highlighting their exceptional work across nursing services, education, innovation and leadership, and the vital role they play in the healthcare system.

While Mrs Hockett was unable to attend the official ceremony held by The Queen’s Nursing Institute (QNI) on 28th November in London, her colleagues at St Helena Hospice celebrated her achievement with tea and homemade cake on Wednesday last week, where she commented:

“Gaining the prestigious Queen’s Nurse award is a real honour. I am proud that my commitment to community nursing over more than 18 years has been acknowledged in this way.”

Dr Emma Tempest, Medical Director at the hospice, praised Nichole:

“I am so pleased Nichole's years of dedication to patients at the end of life, and to their families, has been recognised with this award.

“Whatever Nichole does, whether it's direct patient care, managing services or supporting colleagues, her desire to make sure patients get the care they need is at the heart of it.”

Nichole qualified as a nurse in 2005 and joined the SinglePoint team at St Helena Hospice in 2013, where she answered the first phone call made to the 24/7 support and advice line when the service began.

She later achieved a degree in palliative care and became a clinical nurse specialist caring holistically for patients at home with symptom management, advanced care planning and support for their families.

In her current role as senior sister, she leads and inspires her colleagues at the hospice, and other health care professionals in community settings, with her skills and knowledge in patient-centred care.

Mrs Hockett becomes the fourth Queen’s Nurse at St Helena Hospice.
