Spreading kindness in a Compassionate Community

Supported by St Helena Hospice, Compassionate Communities is a network which works together to help others. Here we meet Kathy Sung, a Compassionate Community Ambassador whose goal is to spread kindness to people in need.

I'm originally from Hong Kong and have lived in Melbourne, London and LA before settling in Colchester in 2022 with my daughter. As a single parent, I was looking for a place which offered a balance between proximity to London and the seaside, and Colchester ticked all the boxes. It’s been a wonderful place to call home.

I studied fashion and worked in fashion and prosthetic make-up for films while living between London and LA. Relocating to the UK had always been my plan and we made the move during Covid. This gave me the opportunity to spend more time with my daughter but I also missed working.

To stay active, I began volunteering at St Helena Hospice and that experience was transformative. I saw how Compassionate Communities rebuilds real human connections in a world often dominated by isolation and online interactions. These communities foster collective care, reduce stigma and address social, emotional and practical needs, ensuring no-one faces life’s challenges like illness, caregiving or end of life alone.

After years working in fashion and corporate environments, seeing Compassionate Communities at work inspired me to start my own social enterprise. I set up Blue Sky, a social enterprise which supports single parents and children from single-parent households.

I also decided to become an ambassador for Compassionate Communities because my organisation shares a similar mission: supporting people in need. As an ambassador, my role is to raise awareness, advocate for inclusivity and foster connections. I inspire action, share knowledge and collaborate to create supportive environments where people feel valued.

There are a group of about 20 Compassionate Community Ambassadors who meet in Colchester on a monthly basis. It’s been fantastic to connect with people who share similar interests and are committed to kindness and offer mutual support.

As an ambassador, I try to reach out to vulnerable people who need support. My goal is to spread kindness, inspire others to do the same and create a ripple effect of compassion. Becoming an ambassador is a rewarding opportunity to make a real difference in people’s lives. If you’re passionate about building stronger, more compassionate communities, why not find out more about becoming a Compassionate Community Ambassador and how you can inspire change?
