Anyone in north east Essex who has experienced a bereavement, regardless of how or where their loved one died and no matter how long ago, is welcome to join the monthly session.
Alison Gray, Director of Care at St Helena, said:
“Our new Community Bereavement Café will bring together people with experiences of grief, offering a safe space for peer support that helps reduce feelings of isolation and to provide comfort.
“Following the death of a loved one, there can be a long wait before the funeral takes place, leaving people feeling alone or unsure where to turn. After the funeral, people around you may expect life to return to normal, yet you may continue to experience waves of grief. Throughout the year, certain dates, moments or unexpected triggers can also bring emotions to the surface.
“When you feel like that, where do you go?
“This is where the Community Bereavement Café can make a real difference, offering a place to be heard by trained staff and volunteers, alongside others who are experiencing similar emotions and may relate to what you are going through.
Kelly and Belinda, Senior Healthcare Workers at St Helena, who will be facilitating the first session
“You are welcome to simply sit quietly and listen or to chat with others at your own pace, if and when you feel ready.
“During the sessions, there may be gentle facilitated discussions, such as talking about how to navigate milestones without a loved one, but there is never any pressure to take part. Each group will be responsive to the needs of those participating.”
The Community Bereavement Cafés have been generously supported by Essex County Council Local Community Fund.
Sessions will be hosted on the third Wednesday of every month, 10:30 to 12:00 at the Joan Tomkins Centre, Myland Hall, Barncroft Close, Highwoods, Colchester, CO4 9JU.
There is no need to book but people can contact St Helena’s bereavement team about the session if they would like to by email ces-coordinators@sthelena.org.uk or call 01206 984 274.
St Helena is also looking for volunteers to support the Community Bereavement Café.
When you make a donation to St Helena Hospice, we are charged transactional fees by other companies, including fees for processing payments made to us, looking up addresses and validating bank account details.
We are very grateful to our donors who offer to offset some of these fees with a minor addition to their total amount. This is however completely optional and we are very grateful for your support whether or not you choose to contribute to processing fees.
CloseWe are able to claim an extra 25p on every £1 on your donation amount for no extra cost to you, as long as you are a UK tax payer; have paid enough income tax or capital gains tax in that tax year; and are donating your own money.
