Epic cycling adventure

Peter Warner is about to set off on an epic adventure cycling Land’s End to John O’Groats in memory of his sister-in-law, 58 year old Wendy Maguire, who was supported by St Helena Hospice last year.

Speech markWendy was a very fit person. She was a swimming teacher, she loved to swim. Unfortunately, it’s really very sad that Wendy succumbed to bowel cancer and passed away last April.

Land’s End to John O’Groats has been on my bucket list for quite some time, so to combine it in memory of Wendy, seems a really nice thing to do and it gives me that extra bit of motivation to do it. Wendy was taken from us so early and the Hospice were so wonderful with her and the family, and it's nice to give back to them.

I retired from the fire service support team three years ago now and decided that I'd do something like this and started putting plans together. I bought a new bike because I promised myself a carbon fibre bike for quite some time. The bike was only bought in September and last November, unfortunately, I got knocked off. I was badly bruised and it did put me out for a while and I didn't start cycling again until March, so it put me out for a few months on my training.

The bike was completely a write-off and that bike was called Billy, and the new bike which replaced it is called Billy 2 (Billy two wheels). I had convinced my niece, Belinda Good, and my brother-in-law, Phil Good, to do the ride with me but unfortunately, they both sustained injuries falling from their bikes whilst we were out on a training ride. My brother-in-law has regrettably had to pull out but will look to undertake the LEJOG next year, and although my niece badly bruised a hip, she's hoping to join me on day four through to day nine, which is good.

Other than that, my daughter’s fiancé, Andrew Osbourne, is doing the first two days and the last two days with me, so I'm not totally on my own.

The rest of the team is the wife, Jo, who is director of everything. I don't think she realises what she's taken on with the logistics!

She's riding support in our camper van called ‘Happy’ and I'm putting in what we're calling ‘Happy stops’ every 20 miles, so I'll meet with Jo and Happy and top up on water and snacks.

We're averaging about 70 miles a day and there's a couple of hundreds fitted in and then the last day is 49 miles. In total it's about 1,032 miles! Speech mark

Peter will be raising money for St Helena Hospice in memory of Wendy, and for Alzheimer’s Society, in memory of his mother, Betty, and father-in-law, Brian, who both lived with dementia in the later part of their lives.
