Hospice awards care home accreditation for good end of life care

St Helena Hospice has awarded an accreditation certificate to a care home in Clacton-on-Sea for its good professional standards of end of life care.

The Corner House on Wash Lane completed a range of training, shadowing and critical friend visits provided by St Helena through its Hospice Education programme, to develop the skills of their workforce and achieve best practice in end of life care.

Kate Heslegrave, co-Chief Executive at St Helena Hospice, presented the award to the care home team, and said:

“Our Hospice Education practitioners worked closely with The Corner House to widen the team’s knowledge and practices around end of life care, helping to improve their already good standards.

“Congratulations to everybody at the care home for their hard work and dedication throughout the training, and for sharing the values of St Helena Hospice in treating people with dignity, compassion and respect.”

On behalf of the team at The Corner House, Kate Emery, house manager, said:

“This milestone holds great meaning for our whole team. The achievement reflects both our professional dedication and the personal experiences of loss, that have shaped the compassion and empathy within our team.

“The journey to accreditation has been deeply meaningful, strengthening our commitment to providing care that honours dignity, comfort and peace for every resident and their loved ones.

“We are grateful to our wonderful staff, residents, their families and St Helena Hospice for their trust and support.  This recognition is a tribute to the heart, professionalism and kindness that defines our care home every day.”

The Hospice Education accreditation programme supports care homes in the provision of person-centred care. Hospice Education is a partnership between St Helena Hospice, St Elizabeth Hospice and St Nicholas Hospice Care, offering local health and social care professionals specialist training and education in end of life and palliative care through a range of courses.

The Corner House becomes the 6th care home to be accredited by St Helena Hospice for good end of life care this year. Other care homes awarded in 2025 were Welshwood Manor in Parson’s Health, Milton Lodge Retirement Home on Ipswich Road, Colchester; Crouched Friars Residential Home on Crouch Street, Colchester; The Haven on Harwich Road, Colchester; and The Oaks Residential Home in Great Bentley.
