What do we love about Christmas?

It’s that glowy feeling we get when we gather with family and friends on a winter’s night.

It’s hot festive food warming frozen fingers, and the sound of carols on the cold wind. It’s twinkling lights that brighten the darkness and tell us that this is a time for celebration.

At St Helena Hospice, Christmas is a time to let these feelings glow. Our work to support people as they face dying, death or bereavement does not stop for Christmas - on the contrary, it’s just as important as at any other time of year.

So this Christmas, will you support St Helena Hospice to Let it Glow, for the people we love?

With matched funding, your generosity glows twice as bright

Between 24th November and 24th December, when you donate to St Helena Hospice, your generosity will be doubled - thanks to our generous match funders.

That means, if you donate £20, St Helena Hospice will receive £40.

That’s double the funding to pay for the vital services we provide to people in our local community.

Creating memories that glow forever

It’s thanks to support from local people like you that we’re able to light the lives of our patients in their final days. We love to help create special memories with the people we support that continue to glow long after a loved one has died.

People like Julian and his wife Lucy. Julian came to St Helena and stayed with us over Christmas 2023. The couple and their young daughter Everlie were supported by the amazing staff and nurses at St Helena. They helped Julian and Lucy realise their dream of getting married before Julian died. Lucy has extremely fond memories of their special day:

“It was the perfect wedding for us. The Hospice has a lovely living room, and the staff put up bunting for us. We had drinks, cake, a buffet, and the exact people we wanted were there.

“Our wedding felt like it completed everything. We had Everlie, and getting married kind of drew a circle around our family unit. I just felt really, really happy the whole day.”

We couldn’t continue to provide love, care and comfort for local people like Julian, Lucy and Everlie without your support. Your donations ensure that we can continue to spread joy and warmth for families, and let it glow at Christmas - even as they face dying, death and bereavement.

Thank you - and have a peaceful Christmas.

Frequently asked questions

1. What is matched funding?
Matched funding means your generosity goes twice as far. For every £1 you donate, our match funder will give another £1 thereby doubling your impact at no extra cost to you.

3. How long will donations be matched?
Donations will be doubled between 24 November 2025 and 24 December 2025, or until the matching pot runs out, whichever comes first. We encourage donors to give early to ensure their gift is matched.

5. What types of donations will be matched?
Only personal donations from individuals that would normally be eligible for Gift Aid can be matched. You don’t need to add Gift Aid for your gift to be doubled, it just needs to be the kind of donation that could qualify.

This means donations from events, fundraising challenges, ticket sales, or from companies or organisations can’t be matched.
Example: If you donate £30 directly from your own funds, it will be doubled (whether or not you tick Gift Aid). If you give £30 to sponsor a friend’s marathon, it won’t be doubled.

6. How do I make sure my donation is matched?
Simply donate through our official campaign page during the campaign period. As long as the matching funds are still available and your gift is eligible, it will be doubled automatically.

7. Does Gift Aid also get matched?
No, Gift Aid itself is not matched. However, if you are a UK taxpayer, you can still add Gift Aid to your donation, which increases its value by 25% at no extra cost to you. For example, if you gift £50, it is doubled to £100, and with Gift Aid it becomes £112.50. Gift Aid is added on top of your matched donation, which makes your gift go even further.

8. Can I give regularly, and will it be matched?
Absolutely! Setting up a regular gift is a wonderful way to support us. If your first Direct Debit payment is made during the Matched Giving period, it will be doubled! All future payments will continue as normal and will help us care for local people every day.

9. What happens if I donate after the match pot has run out?
Your gift will still make a big difference to St Helena and be gratefully received, but it won’t be doubled once the matching funds have all been used.

10. How will my donation help?
Your gift will provide vital care, comfort, and support to patients and families facing life-limiting illnesses, helping them feel cared for when it matters most. And during this campaign, every pound goes twice as far.

11. Can I donate offline and still have my gift matched?
Absolutely. Donations made via cheque, bank transfer, or in person at the hospice during the campaign period can still be matched. Just make sure to mention the matched funding campaign when donating.

12. How can I spread the word?
Please tell your friends, family, and colleagues about the campaign, or share it on social media. The more people who know, the more impact we can make together.

13. Who can I contact for more information?
You can reach out to our fundraising team at 01206 931468 or email fundraising@sthelena.org.uk. We’re happy to answer any questions and help you make the most of your support.
