A gift for the future

Witnessing the care her mum received in her final days, inspired Kate Heslegrave to change her Will and leave a gift to St Helena Hospice.

After her mum died at the Hospice, Kate decided to donate her finance and business skills by stepping into a volunteer Trustee role at the charity. After a few years Kate took on the employed role of Director of Finance and Strategy before becoming Chief Finance and Operating Officer, and now as Co-Chief Executive of St Helena, she shares her motivation for supporting Gift in Wills.

Speech markMy mum died in the inpatient unit here at St Helena in February seven years ago.

She’d had multiple complex illnesses for many years and, as many families, we struggled to cope with being passed around from specialist to specialist, each treating one illness but not the holistic picture, and spending what felt like as much time in hospital with her as we did out.

When St Helena scooped us up as a family, the magic started.

SinglePoint and the hospice in the home community team took over her care and gave us a place to ask questions, understand and plan for her future, and kept her at home and out of hospital. Her last week was spent in the hospice inpatient unit and the care she, and we as a family, got from the team here was just exceptional.

The amazing care we were gifted by St Helena made me want to do more and give back in some way. I initially became a Trustee and then in 2022 I started working here full time.

Today, I find myself as Co-CEO and the only reason I’m here is because of her and the care that the amazing team here provided. I am still grateful every single day for that.

I walked around the Hospice on the anniversary of my mum's death feeling so honoured to be a part of this organisation and it felt very fitting to see the first snowdrops of the year blooming against a backdrop of blue sky.

Seeing the care my mum received and knowing how determined and hard everyone works, it was an easy decision to leave a gift in my Will. You never know if you or your family will need the service in the future.

I whole heartedly believe that the years ahead are going to be a positive and exciting time for St Helena.

We will absolutely regrow our clinical services, we will continue to deliver exceptional care to our community, and we will provide job security for everyone that works here. I'm proud to work alongside the St Helena team.Speech mark
