Eva’s granddaughter Maria explains:
My mum died at the hospice in summer 2020 on my nan's birthday with my nan holding my mum's hand.
My mum had turned 69 the week before. She had been having a rest at the hospice and on her birthday came home and saw the grandchildren and then went back to the hospice in the evening, and then she died a week later.
It was Covid-restricted times but during that little reprieve in the August where we were allowed to have bit more family around, so for an awful situation, it was very comfortable at the hospice. It was a very compassionate and empathetic experience and it really did make everyone feel at ease. We couldn't have asked for anything more.
It's a job that no one else could do. Those nurses, even in my mum's unconscious state, still got her washed, dressed, brushed her hair, creamed her feet, creamed her hands, things that none of us would ever have even thought about doing, they were on it.
My dad was there all the time, didn't leave her side once. I have two other sisters and we were all there, we were all very lucky to be there together, and then all our husbands came and said goodbye.

Unfortunately, my nan had a stroke in the following March. She was 95 and had lived on her own independently, but never really recovered from the stroke and had dementia, so for the last four years she was in a care home. She died at 99; she would have been 100 in the August, but she died in the May. She lived her life, outlived everybody, so she was ready.
My nan left a gift in her Will because of the comfort and dignity my mum had there. Now we all have a direct debit set up to donate monthly to the hospice because we want to make sure that other people get that care too.
