They treat you like a human being and not just a number

Dennis shares what he thinks of St Helena Hospice.

I appreciate all the people who have ever put money in a pot for St Helena. When I was referred to the Hospice, I didn’t know what to expect, but it’s brilliant. It makes you feel so relaxed.

Within two days I was a different person after being in here because of their care; they can’t do enough for you in the middle of the night or during the day. The gardens are beautiful to sit in when it’s nice weather - it’s turned me around. Everyone says if there is anything I want, to just ask.

They treat you like a human being and not just a number. I didn’t know much about hospices and I can speak about it a lot clearer now; people need to understand you are not sent here to die; you are here for people to take care of you. It’s a great feeling and has made a huge difference to how I feel and the way my body is reacting. It puts you at ease.

Greest family

Dennis daughter agrees:

Since my dad has been in the Hospice, I’ve just found everyone to be nothing but helpful. Nothing’s too much trouble. It feels like home; it’s just amazing what they do here.

When dad first got here, after about two hours he asked when he could go home. He didn’t want to be here; he didn’t want any help. But then when he saw they were treating him as a human and saying you can do what you want; if you want a cigarette, have one, if you want a beer, have a beer. He settled right in and after two or three days he lit up and almost became himself again. For my mum that’s really amazing to see. If this place can help my dad, it can help anyone because my dad finds it hard to accept help.

Izabella loves it. No one looks at her to say why is there a baby here. Everyone is happy to see her. Her favourite person in the world is grandad. As soon as she gets there she shouts ‘Grangrad!’ She knows where to find the swings and the ice cream and the restaurant.

We’ve met some amazing people who have been in and out of the Hospice for years - they have a boost and then go off again! The staff are amazing. They treat my dad like one of his friends would.
