Tips to look after your Christmas tree

If you haven't already, it's time to get the decorations up for the festive season and we're sure you agree, no set of decorations is complete without a Christmas tree!

For some that means getting the artificial tree out of the cupboard, but for the rest it’s time to head down to your local garden centre to pick out the perfect real tree.

People can often be put off buying a real tree as keeping it looking as healthy as when you first purchased it can be a nightmare - that’s why we’re sharing some great tips to help you keep your tree looking as good as new throughout the Christmas period.

Buy a fresh good quality tree – When choosing your tree, you need to make sure the needles are flexible and green. Needles that are not flexible and snap easily mean the tree is already in the stages of dying so will not last long. Check how many needles are falling when the tree is moved; a few is to be expected but if it is a lot then you should find another one.

Trim the trunk – Saw half an inch off the tree, this will cut off any hardened sap and make it easier for your tree to absorb lots of water. If you don’t have a saw at home, make sure to ask the person you are buying the tree from to do this for you.

Keep your tree hydrated – Just like a house plant, your tree needs water to survive. They should be kept in water at all times. Trees can consume a large amount of water each day so make sure you are regularly checking its water supply.

Make sure the temperature is just right – Don’t keep the tree too close to your radiator or fireplace; these tree’s survive best in cold conditions. Changes in heat will dry out your tree quickly and cause it to die.

Stick to the basics – Brands will try to sell you expensive foods or treatments to keep your tree alive, when in reality all your tree needs is fresh water, just like it would do outside of your home.

If you follow these five tips, your Christmas tree should look fabulous throughout the festive season!

Don’t forget, when it comes to recycling your tree after Christmas, we can deal with the hassle for you. As usual, we’re spreading the magic of Christmas by collecting and recycling your trees to raise money for St Helena Hospice. Save yourself the trip to the recycling centre and let us take care of it for you! Find out more and register your tree for Tree-cycle on Saturday 7th January 2023.
