My husband, Grahame, and I don't have children so when we updated our Wills, we chose to leave a percentage of our estate to St Helena.
The Hospice is just amazing and so is all the care they give in people’s homes.
I remember seeing they brought a lady’s horse into the grounds of the Hospice. It's that sort of thing; they know it's terminal, but they make people’s last weeks as lovely as they can.
They get a small amount from the NHS but the bulk of funding, they have to raise and legacies are part of that, so that's why we made our Wills with a chunk of money going out to St Helena.
Sadly, my mum died about six years ago in hospital and I know that experience would have been so much better for both of us if she’d been in the Hospice. We’re so glad our legacy will ensure more people don’t have to go through a similar bad experience.
Good dying should be a priority. We've all got to go through it, whether you're looking on like I did with Mum, and then later we’re going to go through it ourselves. We all hope for a good death and hospices help make that happen.
We’re all worth more dead than when we're alive, and just think of the difference leaving a gift to St Helena will make in terms of how many patients that will look after; how many people like Mum will get a better death because of this; how many more people will be able to look back on the last days of a friend or relative with peace and not turmoil.
Additionally, this also helps with bereavement care and support, as well as end of life education and training for healthcare professionals.
If everyone left just 1% of their estate to St Helena, they would have enough money to make sure everyone in this area had a good death.
When you make a donation to St Helena Hospice, we are charged transactional fees by other companies, including fees for processing payments made to us, looking up addresses and validating bank account details.
We are very grateful to our donors who offer to offset some of these fees with a minor addition to their total amount. This is however completely optional and we are very grateful for your support whether or not you choose to contribute to processing fees.
CloseWe are able to claim an extra 25p on every £1 on your donation amount for no extra cost to you, as long as you are a UK tax payer; have paid enough income tax or capital gains tax in that tax year; and are donating your own money. If you pay less income tax and/or capital gains tax than the amount of Gift Aid claimed on all of your donations in that tax year it is your responsibility to pay any difference.
