Read stories DonateThe event, which was sponsored by Pickering Electronics Ltd, saw supporters take on the 7 miles between the piers, with some opting to make the return journey on foot to conquer 14 miles.
Many walked in memory of their loved ones who had been supported by St Helena Hospice at home or at the Hospice. Participants of the charity walk wrote special messages on memory boards at both piers, as well as on signs they wore on their backs, to those they were thinking about on the walk.
Kirsty Herrington walked 14 miles in memory of her mum, Teresa, who was cared for at the Hospice last year. Kirsty walked on her own, but bumped into Sarah Williams, who she met last year when both their mums were staying at the Hospice.
Kirsty said: “My mum was cared for by the staff at St Helena and I’ll never be able to repay them for the love and care they gave her; I wanted to walk Pier to Pier because I wanted to give something back and try and raise as much money as I could.
“The walk today is a bit emotional for me. It’s coming up to the year anniversary of mum’s death and I knew I was going to cry today so I wanted to come by myself and just take it in and do it at my own speed.
“I’m very excited and looking forward to raising as much money as I can to say thank you for all the love and care they gave my mum and me. So far I have raised £450 and it’s still going.
“Mum was looked after at home by nurse Emma before she went into the Hospice for three weeks. It sounds weird, but I couldn’t have asked for a nicer death and I am forever grateful for everything the Hospice did.”
Alison Brown walked 7 miles from Clacton to Walton Pier with her sister, Claire Crociquia in memory of their dad, Robin Brown.
She said: “We’re feeling a bit emotional today. We lost dad in January. Seeing everyone here today makes it all a bit real. We’re taking part because we want to give back to the Hospice for everything they did for dad.”
Lisa Chenery, events fundraiser at St Helena Hospice, said: “It was wonderful to see so many people joining us at Pier to Pier to raise funds so more patients and families facing incurable illness and bereavement can receive the support they desperately need.
“If taking part, or seeing the photos from the event, has given you the buzz, our Firewalk will be coming back again later this year, so watch this space!
“A massive thank you to everyone who took part and to all those people who sponsored someone walking. The sponsorship raised by participants will make a huge difference to local people at the most difficult time of their lives.
“Huge thanks also to our amazing volunteers, without whom we couldn’t hold this popular event. We are also incredibly grateful to our sponsors, Pickering Electronics Ltd, for their continued support; to St John Ambulance, who gave up their time free of charge to be on hand in case medical help was required; to our warm up leads, Jodie and Steph from Lucy T Fitness; our hosts Jeremy and Ross from RCT entertainment; and to both Clacton and Walton Piers.”
