Include part of your story in St Helena Hospice’s time capsule

St Helena Hospice is inviting you to share your memories with future generations by including part of your story in its time capsule, marking its 36 year history.

Local people can choose a special item or record a video or audio message for inclusion in the time capsule, which will be buried in the hospice grounds for future generations to discover and open.

The Brenchley family will be adding items to the time capsule in memory of Lisa, who was 22 years old when she was admitted as St Helena Hospice’s first patient in 1985. Lisa’s dad Brian (pictured middle) is putting in a newspaper article from the Gazette about her from St Helena’s 35th anniversary in 2020, which includes the last family photo taken of the four of them. Lisa’s sister Lyn (pictured left) is going to put in a Bay City Rollers single as a memory of when they used to dance and sing together in their bedrooms as teenagers.

Di Turner, hospice in the home clinical nurse specialist, (pictured right) who has worked at St Helena Hospice for more than 30 years, will be adding a letter to future nurses about what it was like working as a nurse during the pandemic.

Lizzie Deed, supporter engagement fundraiser at St Helena Hospice, said: “Over the last year and a half, many of us have felt the impact of being unable to spend time together with loved ones or to create precious memories to look back on, giving us a deeper appreciation for the memories we do hold.

“That’s why, to mark our history as a hospice and to celebrate the memories we have been part of in our local community, we will be burying a time capsule in the hospice grounds to share your story with future generations.”

The local charity is also hosting a time capsule event on Saturday 2nd October in upper Castle Park, Colchester, where anyone is welcome to come along and step back in time to enjoy a variety of activities including visiting the St Helena vintage pop-up shop; or treating yourself to something delicious from Darcy’s Sweet Shop or Sip and Tuck, or enjoy a cream tea.

There will also be a short celebration service at 3pm to celebrate your treasured memories.

People are asked to reserve their space in the time capsule in advance for a suggested donation to St Helena Hospice, with all proceeds going towards supporting local people facing dying, death and bereavement.

You can then bring along your item for inclusion in the time capsule to the event in Castle Park, where you can also record your message in a video booth.
