Special school ready to take on Midnight Walk for local hospice

Staff from a special school in Elmstead Market are warming up to take part in a popular nighttime charity walk this September to raise funds for St Helena Hospice.

Twelve staff from Market Field School and their family and friends make up the 22-person strong Team MFS, who will be joining hundreds of participants on Friday 27th September for Midnight Walk, sponsored by Fenwick Colchester.

Market Field School is a special school for children and young people who experience moderate learning difficulties.

Sarah Rogers works in the reception office at Market Field School and will be walking in memory of her mum and dad. Mrs Rogers said:

“It started off with just a couple of us talking about doing Midnight Walk just as a fun night, and then it snowballed throughout the school with staff and their families getting involved as well.

“It’s amazing how many people have been touched by St Helena Hospice. For me it was the care for my mum and then all the support our family had after that. I was quite surprised how many of my colleagues have had either family members, or they know of people, that have had help from the hospice.

“Two of Team MFS are doing the four miles and the rest of us are doing the nine mile walk, so we're going for it! It's nice to challenge yourself, and it is a big challenge for us, but in comparison it's a bigger challenge for everyone using hospice services right now and what they are going through.

“The routes go past the hospice so that will be a big moment for us.

“If everyone just raises even £100 that would be a big total, so hopefully together we can all make a big difference.”

Anyone over the age of 11 can join in and participants are encouraged to dress in bright colours as the charity event has a neon theme to light up the night. Both routes start and finish at the home of Colchester United, the JobServe Community Stadium, where there will be a fun event village from 7pm with a DJ, performers, glitter station, food stalls and more, plus glass and Lego walk challenges. Midnight Walk sets off at 10pm with most participants still walking at midnight.
