Pier to Pier is nearly here; the countdown is on for hospice coastline event

The popular family friendly Pier to Pier walk along the coast takes place on Sunday 12th May 2024 and is to raise vital funds for St Helena Hospice to supports people facing incurable illness and bereavement across north east Essex.

Participants need to sign up to take part in Pier to Pier, which is sponsored by Pickering Group, by Wednesday 8th May to take advantage of the £5 per person registration fee with a sponsorship target of £60. After then and on the day, taking part will cost £20 per person with no fundraising requirement.

The event starts from either Clacton or Walton Pier taking in views of the sea, and participants can choose to walk the seven miles between the two piers or challenge themselves further to make the return journey – 14 miles in all.

Many people walk on their own or in groups to remember their loved ones and support the hospice, like 26 year old Joe Buckman from Colchester, who is taking part with a group of around 40 family, friends and colleagues. Joe was nine years old when his dad, John, was cared for by St Helena Hospice. Joe said:

“St Helena is important to me because my dad was at the hospice about 14 years ago. He was in and out of the hospice for a long time, and it meant so much to have St Helena care for him and do everything they did.

“From caring and compassionate staff to a truly beautiful site, we couldn’t have done it without their support.

“My parents got married at the hospice, which was very special for them and for me and my sister. The after care is so important and fundamentally, what St Helena excels at.

“I remember we were looked after so well with our bereavement as children, and it really helped me and my family.

“It's motivating me to do Pier to Pier knowing they still do that fantastic and such critical work. I'm very grateful for St Helena and the amazing work they do.”

As well as encouraging people to sponsor him to do the event, he has personally sponsored a motivational board along the route to inspire participants. He said:

“I’ve always loved the quote ‘Be the change you want to see in the world’, and I think it is a great reflection to current and future actions and ultimately why everyone is doing the Pier to Pier.”
