The scenic walk, which has been going since 2011, starts from either Clacton or Walton Pier taking in views of the sea, and participants can choose to walk the seven miles between the two piers or challenge themselves further to make the return journey – 14 miles in all.
Pier to Pier is open to all ages, plus the route is suitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs. Many people walk on their own or in groups to remember their loved ones, or simply take part to support their local hospice.
Victoria Jones has been taking part in Pier to Pier in memory of her husband, Ash, who died at the Hospice in 2018. Victoria has taken on many fundraising challenges to support St Helena Hospice and she plans to take part again this year to mark the 5th anniversary of Ash's death.
She said: “Ash was cared for in the final six weeks of his life at St Helena Hospice by the amazing staff there.
“Prior to his admission he attended a men's support group there which he found really beneficial. I take part in Pier to Pier to raise as much money as I can to give back to St Helena after the support we both received before, during, and that I received after Ash died and I continue to do so.
“St Helena will always hold a special place in my heart.”
Lisa Chenery, St Helena Hospices events fundraiser, added: “Whatever your reason for taking part in Pier to Pier, whether like Victoria you’re walking to remember loved ones; or you’re challenging yourself to 14 miles with friends or colleagues, you will be helping to ensure more patients and families facing incurable illness and bereavement receive the support they desperately need.
“Our services are more in demand than ever as the local NHS faces extreme pressures and turns to us for support. Without the generosity of our incredible local community, we cannot continue to provide vital and essential care to the growing number of patients and families who desperately need hospice care or bereavement support.

We are very grateful to our donors who offer to offset some of these fees with a minor addition to their total amount. This is however completely optional and we are very grateful for your support whether or not you choose to contribute to processing fees.
